London’s Most Photographed Piece of Street Furniture

Nobody queues to make a call any more, yet the red box still stops people on the pavement. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott drew the first version in 1924 and wanted it painted silver; the Post Office overruled him and chose a red loud enough to be spotted through London fog.

The one everybody pictures is the K6, rolled out in 1935 for the Silver Jubilee of George V — around sixty thousand of them, cast iron, domed roof, a crown pierced into each side so light could escape at night.

Hundreds are now listed structures, and the ones still standing have been given new jobs: village libraries, defibrillator cabinets, one-person coffee bars. That stubbornness is exactly why a London fridge magnet in this shape reads as the city itself, no caption needed.

This souvenir magnet is moulded in three dimensions rather than printed flat. Every pane in the door and the narrow side window is raised and picked out in white, so the glazing bars catch the light the way real ironwork does, and the domed roof steps forward over the frame.

The TELEPHONE sign boards are painted in miniature on two faces, the crowns above them are finished in gold, and LONDON runs across the base plate in white block letters. At 4.0 × 7.4 cm it stands upright on the fridge door like a small kiosk on a corner.

Put it next to a double-decker bus or a Tower Bridge magnet and you have most of a London street in the space of a hand.
