Description
The Bird That Only Ever Lived Here: Mauritius Souvenir Magnets and the Dodo
The dodo existed on exactly one island in the world. It was never found anywhere but Mauritius — a flightless bird close to a metre tall, with no predators to worry about and therefore no instinct to run from anything.
That was the problem. When sailors began stopping at the island in the late 1500s, the dodo walked up to meet them. Within roughly eighty years it was gone, along with most of the lowland forest it had lived in.
Mauritius has never treated this as something to hide. The dodo holds up one side of the national coat of arms, its reassembled skeleton sits in the museum at Port Louis, and its outline turns up on everything from banknotes to street signs. It is an unusual emblem for a country to choose — a bird it managed to lose — and it gives the island’s surviving wildlife a weight that few destinations can match.
Sculpted in the Round: A Closer Look at This Dodo Fridge Magnet
This one is the bird on its own, modelled fully in the round rather than pressed flat against a backing. The hooked beak is painted deep red-brown with a yellow tip, there is a small black bead of an eye, and the plumage is built up in overlapping layers so the whole body reads as feathers rather than a smooth shell.
The colour runs warm — buttery yellow across the breast, deepening through apricot to rust along the back and wing, with a curled golden tail plume behind. Because the shading is brushed on by hand, no two pieces come out quite the same.
The bird stands on a brown log base with the bark grain cut into it and “Dodo MAURITIUS” raised across the front in white. If you would rather have the island’s scenery along with the bird, the Mauritius colonial landmark fridge magnet sets a dodo against a painted waterfront of palms, beach and colonial rooftops instead.
