Description

A Facade That Outlived Its Church: Macau Souvenir Magnets

What draws crowds up those sixty-six stone steps is technically a wall. Fire took the rest of St. Paul’s in 1835, leaving only the carved granite front standing against open sky, and Macau decided that was reason enough to keep it.

Look closely at the real thing and the story of the city is written into the stone: Jesuit saints beside a Chinese-inscribed warning, a bronze dove at the summit, peonies and chrysanthemums carved by craftsmen brought over from Japan.

That mixture of Portuguese Catholic ambition and southern Chinese craft is Macau in a single elevation, which is why the facade, not the casinos, still ends up on every postcard.

Cut-Through Metal Detail on a Ruins of St. Paul’s Fridge Magnet

Cast in zinc alloy with an antique gold finish, the magnet copies the facade tier by tier: paired columns on every level, the scrolled volutes at the shoulders, the triangular pediment and its small cross at the top.

The window and door openings are pierced straight through the metal, so the wall reads as a shell with daylight behind it, exactly the way the ruin looks from Company of Jesus Square. Darkened patina fills the recesses while the column edges and cornices stay bright gold.

A stepped plinth carries 澳門大三巴牌坊 above MACAU in raised lettering, and at roughly 6.3 by 7.1 cm the piece is solid metal, heavy enough to feel like a small architectural model rather than a trinket.
